Director of Music
Reports to: Minister
Works with: Minister, Office Administrator, Director of Religious Education, choir members, the Sunday Service committee, paid and volunteer musicians as well as other committees as appropriate
Status: part time (average 19 hours per week)
Job Summary
The Director of Music directs the congregation’s music program in consultation with the Minister. They support worship with music, involve the congregation in singing together and provide opportunities for church members and friends to share their musical talents with the congregation.
The Director of Music has overall accountability for the music program as they organize and direct the choir, select music for worship and accompany the congregation, the choir and soloists as needed. They lead congregational singing and engage other musicians and supervise their performance as needed. They will fulfill administrative duties as needed.

Essential Functions of the Music Director
Worship: The Music Director
- Recruits, organizes, directs and rehearses the church choir
- Selects and orders music for worship
- Provides accompaniment for congregational singing, the choir, and soloists
- In consultation with the minister and, as time permits, offers worship services on days and times other than Sunday morning
Connections: The Music Director
- Meets regularly with the minister and Sunday services committee
- Attends staff meetings
- Networks with other Unitarian Universalist Music professionals through their membership in The Association for Unitarian Universalist Music Ministries (AUUMM)
Minimum qualifications for the Director of Music position
- Experience directing a volunteer choirproficient ability to read music
- Fluency in instrumental performance, preferably keyboard ability to accompany choral singing (choir and congregation)
- A degree in Music or equivalent experience
- Support Unitarian Universalist values (because we don’t want to hire someone who can’t support what we stand for)
- Willingness to deepen understanding of Unitarian Universalism through professional development coursework
Salary is contingent upon training and relevant experience and is based on the Unitarian Universalist Association’s salary schedule for music positions (available upon request). Benefit package includes two weeks paid vacation, sick leave, health insurance. Retirement available after a probationary period.
Initial contract period will be from March 1 to December 31, 2025 and may be renewed upon agreement of both parties.
